An Indian Piligrim was written towards the end of 1937, almost three years after The Indian Struggle. However, while the starting point of The Indian Struggle was 1920, this second autiobiographical work deals with the earlier years. Bose's health broke down after prolonged incarceration by the British Indian Government. |

To recuperate, as well as to carry on with his struggle abroad, Bose sailed for Europe in February 1933. There, Bose kept travelling, lecturing and meeting eminent personalities across Europe to build up support for India's freedom struggle. He was back to India for a brief period to see his ailing father. However, by the time he reached India, Janakinath had passed away. Subhas left India in January 1935, after staying just over a month - all the while as a home intern. Keen to come home, Bose dared the Government to arrest him, and he was, on his arrival in April, 1936. Bose was finally released in March, 1937. However, he was still not in perfect health, but that did not stop him from engaging in the hectic schedule of political work. After being nominated as Congress President, on Gandhiji's advice, Bose again left for Europe in November, 1937 to regain his health, so that he could bear with the strenuous schedule of a Congress President. He returned to India late in January, 1938. It was during this trip that he wrote An Indian Pilgrim. An Indian Piligrim is richer in the autobiographical flavour in comparison to The Indian Struggle, which was more of Bose's interpretation and commentary on the freedom movement in India as he saw it, rather than being strictly an autobiography. The book was published for the first time in India in 1948, by Thacker, Spink & Company Ltd. |
